Home – What To Do When Disaster Strikes

A major part of this writing is What To Do BEFORE disaster strikes. Read the Definition of Preparedness.

NEW Release

I have had inquiries about purchasing all of the books or sets of books in a category. We did this when we had printed editions, but not many have asked about E books sets.

They are now available and here is the Information. See  Ritchie Library- Available Now

Fern Ritchie – An Artist’s Work In Slide Shows- Link above.

YOU MAY FREELY DOWNLOAD ANY OR ALL OF THE SHOWS- it was a work of Love, upon which no price could be placed. If you elect to copy a slide, you are obligated to give credit to the artist. That is the only restriction placed upon your acceptance of the shows.

Website Content

The books and blogs presented on this website were written to help people survive the shortages, hazards, and failures of civilization, whether natural or man-made. They were written by two active individuals from their personal experiences over the better part of a Century.
It is up to the reader to select and benefit from our experience, rather than having to start at zero and repeat it, mistakes and all. You are On Your Own.
The Ceramics Series books were initially written to help ceramists survive during the first energy crisis in the 1970′s.

See The download WARNING below.

There is a final announcement at the end of the page- don’t miss it.

Article Schedule

A topical article is scheduled every seven days; about one per week. however a timely blog may appear at any time- I wrote  20 articles during September. I hope I hear from you about any article that strikes a chord.

Content of the Books

Disaster Preparedness Series

BEFORE a disaster, You need to know:

  1. Chance of occurrence where you are located.
  2. Warning times- Government warnings, cloud bursts, smoke, weather.
  3. What happens- Likely extent of damage, failure modes.
  4. Needs in advance-Food, tools, water, shelter, document disk.
  5. Steps to take in advance. – Plan escape routes. Check- in center.

That is what these books tell you.

These books are an important contribution toward our goal to help others. Until you are faced with a disaster situation, you probably will not appreciate this. I urge you to take a serious look at these books BEFORE your place is a pile of rubble or ashes, has just plain disappeared, or is going gurgle-gurgle in flood waters.

That is the Basic Rule here. We have learned plenty over more than 60 years each and our goal is to transfer our experience and knowledge to those who follow us. In the end, it is what you do for yourself that matters. Survival should not just depend upon others. It is all about Family

Your survival after a disaster should include keeping your job. The amount of time you need to recover and arrange care for your family after a disaster is proportionate to your preparation BEFORE a disaster. Besides, how long will your employer keep a job opening if you aren’t there?

New Economy Series

Our most recent contribution to survival, this topic is important to the 40 million unemployed, plus the millions the government no longer considers. and For People Who Want To Help Themselves

This Series could also be called Survival Guide to Hard Times. Its purpose is to enable living to continue in the face of job loss, inflation, market crash, limited fossil fuel, food shortages, and/or economic depression. Survival should not just depend upon others. Oh, sure, Uncle Sugar will get there with a helping hand- How long do you want to wait?

These books make unique contributions to the Money Problems, otherwise known as the New Economy, answering to any or all of these factors.:Inflation is reducing the purchasing power of the dollar.

Out of control spending has created us as a debtor nation in the world community. Less oil available by whatever means means transportation problems that will realign our entire culture. READ THE ARTICLES.

War Veterans – Post Disaster Stress Trauma

First Aid For Disaster Stress Trauma – A Guide and Self-Help Manual    It is appropriate for this purpose, too.

With the added emphasis on Stress Trauma in returning military from the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars, note that The Stress symptoms and treatment do not change, whatever the source of stress happens to be.

Book Sales

Note that our books are only available as E books- there are no printed copies for sale. It is our way of providing the information contained at the lowest possible price. The cost of printing and shipping more than doubles the price. Secondary sales, such as Amazon, more than doubles the price again, as they exact 55 percent commission, plus a “membership fee”, plus shipping to their warehouses, plus shipping charges to the customer.

Purchase through PayPal makes each book instantly available for downloading. We never see your credit card, only confirmation of your order through PayPal. You do not need to be a member to use PayPal.

WARNING; After you buy a book, do not leave the PayPal page until you have linked for the book download. If you check your PayPal balance option, you cannot return to the page for the download link. then you will have to email me for help.

We can only pray that each customer , in the name of personal integrity, does not freely share his Ebook with friends and neighbors. That way, our one-man operation continues to serve as a livelihood.

Disaster Planning

No matter where you live or your position in life, sooner or later you are going to be faced with a disaster, most of you more than once.

As we have seen in New Orleans or anywhere along the coast of the Indian Ocean, you will be ON YOUR OWN, so plan on it. Three days food and water storage to hold you and your family before help arrives is not a realistic plan, as we have recently seen.

Information Relative To Making A Living

Maybe it is time to become self-employed, whether it is weaving, ceramics, or farming.

We made a good living from the Ceramics Craft for many years. How we did it is the product of these books as well as the technical topic of the books.

The lessons in Fern Ritchie’s weaving book are basic to all weaving.

A home garden, found in several of our books, not only provides food for your family, it also provides barter goods and some additional income at farmers’ markets.

Alternative Energy Applications and Energy Conservation Series

Am I a conservation activist?

Not in the sense that I go out and hug trees or picket a polluter, but I have spent a lifetime trying, by example, to demonstrate how to conserve energy, reduce pollution, and use alternative energy sources. Those points are emphasized in most of my books. Some people get my message and others will not get it, until it hits them right between the eyes. There’s an element of SURVIVAL here, too. Keeping warm or cool is not an option; it is a family matter.

Edible Plants- Wild and Domestic – Series

You need never to go hungry with this information. Eight years went into the identification, listing, photography, and finding out how to prepare all of these nearly 3000 plants for eating, as well as proofing many of them.  Gardening, as well as eating is also a family matter.

Books For Everyone

These books are for general pleasure and do not fit into a specific Series

Two of the following books are autobiographical. We have been there, done that. Yes, it takes time, but Fern, my wife and I, had done things together for over 62 years. Several of these books are hers, and many more have us as co-authors. We were compatible and nothing in these books was accomplished solo. We had been business partners for over 40 years. You might want to take a look at them. They are also part of a recipe for a happy, compatible marriage. Fern passed on in 2010, but her art and writing lives on forever.

Note To My Readers

Since March, 2012,  my new website has been up, I have been encouraged by notes of thanks and appreciation. Thanks for your kind words-Keep them coming.

Down through history the concept of patronage developed where the viewers of art bought some of the artist’s work to keep him eating and thus produce more of the works they liked to view.
My goal is to help people benefit from my experience and make their lives a bit easier, including survival. Writing is my livelihood- no corporate wealth support here.
All of these books are Ebooks and are priced at $4.95 but for a few, and are delivered by immediate download at the instant of ordering and paying PayPal ( in any currency). ANY of my books are better than the blogs you like. I know you can afford them or you wouldn’t be on line or you wouldn’t have a computer.

You do not have to join PayPal to use their service.
If you like what you read ( think about how great the book will be) Tell your friends.
If you don’t like something, Tell me- so I can fix it- if possible.

Comments are important, too, The writer needs to know if he is on track and people are willing to read his stuff or if he has become Ho-hum. Just a few words as a comment would tell me if I am still tuned in.
The bottom line is that if you want me to continue writing, more of you must buy books. Otherwise, the artist will starve and ALL of these blogs will disappear.
Bottom Line; No sales, no website. It must support itself. Think about that if you benefit from my writing
Every freebie has a price.

Final Warning

At the beginning of the page  I mention that the experience for this writing was gained over the better part of the century. I am getting old. One of these days my Lifetime Warranty will run out and there will be no more: writing, website, books for sale- nothing. I am this website.

It is easy to put off obtaining something you need with “I can get it later.” Well, Later may be too late. When this site shuts down, it is over-all of it. The last advice on this page is do it now, if you  ever expect to have it at all- that’s articles, books- anything here.

    About Gold
    Call it whatever you wish.
It is a stable way to maintain your wealth, however small it may be. Over the long term it increases value as the currency inflates. That pretty much defines gold as an investment, too.

I seldom comment, but after reading a few of the remarks
here Ritchie Unlimited Publications, What to do when disaster strikes.
I actually do have a few questions for you if
you tend not to mind. Could it be simply me or does it look like a few of these responses come across as if they are left by brain
dead folks? :-P And, if you are posting on additional online
sites, I’d like to follow anything fresh you have to post. Could you make a list of every one of all your public pages like your twitter feed, Facebook page or linkedin profile?

  18. Ralph Ritchie says:

There is an archive list, by month and year in the right-hand column of every page for you to see what I have written.

Second, I am so busy writing that I don’t have time for Facebook or the other social pages. I would rather do a reasonable job on these pages than a poor job on many.

Brain dead? Poor composition? Comments come from all over the world and others may not have the sentence structure or syntax perfect. What does it matter? As to local poor grammar, perhaps they are dropouts or maybe had poor home schooling. What does it matter? I still welcome their enthusiastic comments.

  19. Hey! Do you know if they make any plugins to assist with Search Engine Optimization?

  24. Ida says:

First off I would like to say wonderful blog!

I had a quick question in which I’d like to ask if you
do not mind. I was interested to find out
how you center yourself and clear your head prior to writing.
I have had difficulty clearing my mind in getting my ideas out there.

I truly do take pleasure in writing but it just seems like the
first 10 to 15 minutes tend to be wasted simply just trying to figure out how
to begin. Any ideas or tips? Kudos!

  25. Ralph Ritchie says:

    Hi Ida
That is why I write in the middle of the night. After two or three hours sleep ( you can train yourself this way), my mind is clear and thoughts are fresh. I do the same thing in daytime, nap first then write.

Ten minutes doesn’t work for me.

Keep woking on it- good luck

  38. When making your emergency plan, consider the following guidelines.
I had no idea there were so many people in our community who could not read.
A lot of dogs, cats and even other exotic animals were left in the streets on their own as
humans evacuated because of the said hurricane. Statistics
have shown that homes displaying decals stating that the home is protected by an alarm monitoring service are
less likely to be the victims of burglaries. ”TRUTH: The truth of the matter is that disaster
preparedness is simple and not really that expensive.

Have a look at my web page :: garcinia cambogia formula reviews – Georgiana,

  49. Ralph Ritchie says:

    Hi Georgiana
i have noted that the best English grammar and sentence structure comes from outside the US. I attribute this to failure of the schools to instill the native written language and to the sloppy use of the Internet. Tragic. I have written several articles about the value of good writing and language usage.

As to other sites and social connections. there are none. It is enough for me to keep up the once a week, or more schedule of my articles.
    best to you

  56. I believe what you published made a bunch of sense. However, what about this?
suppose you composed a catchier post title?
I am not saying your content isn’t good., but what if you
added a title that makes people want more? I mean Ritchie Unlimited Publications, What to do when disaster strikes is a little vanilla.
You should look at Yahoo’s front page and see how they create post
headlines to get people interested. You might add a video or a picture or two to get people interested
about what you’ve written. In my opinion, it would bring your posts a little bit more interesting.
