The books and blogs presented on this website were written to help people survive the shortages, hazards, and failures of civilization, whether natural or man-made. They were written by two active individuals from their personal experiences over the better part of a Century.
It is up to the reader to select and benefit from our experience, rather than having to start at zero and repeat it, mistakes and all. You are On Your Own.
The Ceramics Series books were initially written to help ceramists survive during the first energy crisis in the 1970′s.

Disaster Preparedness Series

BEFORE a disaster, You need to know:

1. Chance of occurrence where you are located.
2. Warning times- Government warnings, cloud bursts, smoke, weather.
3. What happens- Likely extent of damage, failure modes.
4. Needs in advance-Food, tools, water, shelter, document disk.
5. Steps to take in advance. – Plan escape routes. Check- in center.

That is what these books tell you.

These books are an important contribution toward our goal to help others. Until you are faced with a disaster situation, you probably will not appreciate this. I urge you to take a serious look at these books BEFORE your place is a pile of rubble or ashes, has just plain disappeared, or is going gurgle-gurgle in flood waters.

That is the Basic Rule here. We have learned plenty over more than 60 years each and our goal is to transfer our experience and knowledge to those who follow us. In the end, it is what you do for yourself that matters. Survival should not just depend upon others. It is all about Family

Your survival after a disaster should include keeping your job. The amount of time you need to recover and arrange care for your family after a disaster is proportionate to your preparation BEFORE a disaster. Besides, how long will your employer keep a job opening if you aren’t there?

Disaster Planning

No matter where you live or your position in life, sooner or later you are going to be faced with a disaster, most of you more than once.

As we have seen in New Orleans or anywhere along the coast of the Indian Ocean, you will be ON YOUR OWN, so plan on it. Three days food and water storage to hold you and your family before help arrives is not a realistic plan, as we have recently seen.

Information Relative To Making A Living

Maybe it is time to become self-employed, whether it is weaving, ceramics, or farming.

We made a good living from the Ceramics Craft for many years. How we did it is the product of these books as well as the technical topic of the books.

The lessons in Fern Ritchie’s weaving book are basic to all weaving.

Am I a conservation activist?

Not in the sense that I go out and hug trees or picket a polluter, but I have spent a lifetime trying, by example, to demonstrate how to conserve energy, reduce pollution, and use alternative energy sources. Those points are emphasized in most of my books. Some people get my message and others will not get it, until it hits them right between the eyes. There’s an element of SURVIVAL here, too. Keeping warm or cool is not an option; it is a family matter.

You need never to go hungry with this information. Eight years went into the identification, listing, photography, and finding out how to prepare all of these nearly 3000 plants for eating, as well as proofing many of them.  Gardening, as well as eating is also a family matter.

Two of the following books are autobiographical. We have been there, done that. Yes, it takes time, but Fern, my wife and I, had done things together for over 62 years. Several of these books are hers, and many more have us as co-authors. We were compatible and nothing in these books was accomplished solo. We had been business partners for over 40 years. You might want to take a look at them. They are also part of a recipe for a happy, compatible marriage. Fern passed on in 2010, but her art and writing lives on forever.
